This Week’s Highlights

Here at The Untold Game, we wish we had all of the good ideas. But we don’t, so here’s what we’ve been paying attention to this week.

What we’ve been reading:

Vedelem!

FMStag’s FM22 Vedelem! series reaches the end of the first season, and it’s not so much the drama that captivates here (although it is high), as the ridiculous level of statistical detail we are given about Kispest Honved’s season. Which is immense, and we may be considering stealing for our own Red Star series. Hoved were the side that spawned the Magical Magyars, so we’ll be following this one with interest.

The Big Step: How Football is Dealing with its Gambling Habit

The Set Pieces regularly give us high-quality content, and this is no different. Nobody could have watched Paul Merson’s documentary covering his own addiction, and the difficulties he has faced, and not felt moved. This piece looks at the competing tensions around the gambling industry in the sport, and what is being done to limit the damage being caused by addiction.

Behind the Curtain: Travels in Eastern European Football

Jonathan Wilson’s book are always entertaining, but somehow we missed this one when it first came out, so we’re making up for lost time. Less a history of football, like his other books, this charts Wilson’s own peripatetic footballing life around eastern Europe, and is as compelling as it is informative.

Jonathan Wilson needs no introduction, but just in case, he’s on twitter.

What we’ve been listening to:

Where are the now?

The team over at Scouted Football take a look back at the England U17 World Champions from 2017, and see how the last four years has treated them. From the Emile Smith-Rowe’s and Phil Fodens, who have delivered on their potential, to the lesser known Billy Crelins and Danny Loaders (who isn’t having a bad career by any means), they discuss just how valuable a tournament like this is for scouting the next generation.

What we’ve been watching:

I trapped Haaland at Dover

Jack over at WorkTheSpace has decided to see just how much a single world class player can improve a non-league side. This second part sees Dover in League One, and slowly building, with Erling Haaland leading the line. He’s racking up caps for Norway, so the league’s lack of quality isn’t affecting him, but can he fire the south coast side to glory?
